Guy pointed to different corners and told the men what decoration to put up. He wanted it to be a surprise for Marian on her birthday so he would lie and say it was just another ball for the sheriff. He will act like he had forgotten her birthday and then she wouldnt guess. Guy wanted everything to be perfect so he was in a bad mood as he watched the men decorate the room.
Guy looked down at the present to Marian, a beautiful pendant like the one he had given her a while back but this one was a different colour.

Marian wasn't sure what all the fuss and arrangments were for, but she'd heard that it was another ball for the Sheriff - probably to celebrate another 'victory' over some of Prince Richard's men.
She wasn't interested in celebrating her birthday - her father wasn't around, Robin wasn't - what was the point? She didn't think that anyone knew it was her birthday, least of all Guy - how would he?
"Another ball?" She asked, as she wandered into the main hall and towards Guy.

He jumped slightly but pleased that you didnt guess anything. "Yes it is, for the victory," He stood straight as if to say it was all thanks to him even though he only chose to stay.
"I was hoping you would come along?"

She nodded, wondering what the victory was this time. The Sheriff liked to hold balls to show off his wealth and status when Prince John managed something particularly good, or for the 'King's Birthday' - fake reasons for more secret victories, like when the Black Knights signed the pact.
She looked towards him, "I suppose." She answered; normally she would have refused outright, and have had to be threatened or heavily persuaded into coming. However, she was still feeling a little softer towards Gisborne, after his show of Pride and Loyalty against King John's army.
"What time will it start?" She asked, looking round at the well decorated hall.

He thought about it, it would be good if she turned up after everyone else so she would be more surprised. He wanted to guide her down the steps, into the main hall.
"Latish, roughly six," he replied. He was surprised she had not said no which would of made things harder for him to persuade her. "You will be accompanying me Marian, is that ok?"

She nodded, not bothering to argue. She knew if she argued, she'd end up going anyway - but with a bad atmosphere surrounding them. Her and Guy were getting on alright, since the near miss, where Nottingham had nearly been razed to the ground. He hadn't just walked out and left them - and she respected him for it.
"Okay." She answered, really not in the mood to argue. Although there would never, in Marian's mind anyway, being anything between the two, she was quite happy for them to be friends. It certainly made her life easier!

He smiled at her. "Make sure you wear a suitable dress and not just any old thing, it is a very special occasion." He replied slowly, making sure you got every word.
Guy put his fingers through his hair and smiled.

She nodded, not paying a lot of attention but still taking in every word. "Okay then... I will go up and choose a dress, if that's alright." This afternoon she didn't really feel like socialising: the fact that it was her birthday made her remember the people who weren't here to celebrate; her mother, whom she'd no memory of, her father, newly dead and Robin - in the forest.
"Will you call by my room to tell me when to come down then?" She asked, assuming he would do so as he was to be accompanying her.

"Well, thank you. I do appreciate it: I didn't know anyone knew it was my birthday!" Her mood improved, she was not just doing this so she had an easier life: it was an opportunity to forget about everything that she'd been stressed about recently, and enjoy a normal day, on her birthday - as if she wasn't the Night Watchman, risking her life engaged to an Outlaw. She loved that part of her life, but sometimes, she thought about being normal - how her father might be alive if she was.
The music was cheerful, the people were dancing and the Sheriff wasn't in sight. She wanted to be with Robin, but if she couldn't be, perhaps this could be the next best thing...

He bowed to her. "fancy a dance?" It was a slow dance and the sheriff wasnt here to make him dance but guy thought he must because of Marians special day.

She nodded; "I can hardly refuse, after you've got to all this effort!" She replied, with a soft smile, as they took to the dance floor and began to dance talentedly together.
"So, how did you know it was my birthday?" She asked as they danced, "And how long have you been planning this?" She smiled, the skirt of her dress spinning prettily as they danced.
