As her maid was still unpacking and Prince John had sent word to tell her that he was indisposed to see her that day, Eveline had decided to take a ride through the forest to clear her head. At least, she could vent her fear and frustration here without anyone spying on her. She rode her horse in a straight line, except for dodging the trees, until she reached a river. Eveline turned left and then let her horse pick its own way. "What have I done?" she muttered to herself, pushing her hair off of her face and behind her ears. "I've only been away a couple of weeks, what can have happened?!" She sighed. Why hadn't John told her about the wedding fiasco? Had he started to doubt her loyalty? She sighed again, more heavily. "What am I to do?!" she cried in anguish, sliding from her horse's back. She tied the creature to a nearby tree and then sat herself between two large roots.
Eveline let her head fall back against the rough bark. Her eyes fluttered shut as the wind started to blow through her. She was scared, that was the real reason she had left the castle, but she was helpless. If John had decided to turn against her, for whatever reason, she was powerless and stranded. She depended on him for everything. Her lands were only hers because he let her have them. If he had turned on her, then none of her friends would help her for fear of him. The only avenue left to her was to flee the country. It would be best to run to Richard. Eveline sighed again and let her tears wash her face.
