Adolescence is such a strange time, isn’t it? Especially if you live in the small town of Story City, Iowa; a town that is notable for…well, absolutely nothing. A town with a population of around 3000, the has deep historic and cultural ties to the Scandinavian countries of northern Europe of Denmark, Sweden, and predominately Norway. A large contingent of the City's current population is descended from a major immigration of people from Nordic countries in the 1840s through 1860s. This is evident in the large number of Lutheran churches in the community, which historically had sermons in different languages (Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian) respective of the makeup of their congregations. With such a cultural blending, it’s a surprise that the small town hasn’t realized all the supernatural activity going on in daily life. Of course, mortals don’t like to pay attention to the details of things they can’t explain, so the random deaths and drained victims that happen at least twice a week go unnoticed and unexplored.
Now, you may think that this story begins like any other in Slayer history. Surprisingly, there was no Hellmouth in Story City. Originally, that is, but we’ll get to that point later. When the town was first founded, many creatures, gypsies, witches, and other breeds of demons made their way over to America. They hid out in the historical town, and have stayed ever since. Enter the year 2005. Three years after the Sunnydale Hellmouth was closed, evil creatures all over the world felt the rise of the new Slayers taking over. In the small town of Story City, there was only one Slayer to be created. Her name was Ember, though since the Watcher’s Council had been destroyed, she had no Watcher to help train her and allow her to harness her powers. She lived life unaware that she was a Slayer; she just thought that she had increased strength due to her sports activities. Unfortunately, like many new Slayers who were without Watchers, Ember was murdered by a troupe of Vampires passing through the area only three months after receiving her powers. And so, Story City went unprotected…
As stated before, our story takes place three years after Ember’s murder. A young girl by the name of Abigail walked the streets of Story City alone one evening, having just gotten back from the park with some friends. Due to the population being so small, it wasn’t unusual for the towns youth to be walking alone at night. Abigail, at the ripe age of eighteen, walked onto Main Street, kicking a small can that she found on the sidewalk. ”You’d think this town would eventually get interesting after a hundred years…” She said aloud bitterly, kicking the can against the wall of the local pharmacy. ”I just wish there was some excitement around here!” She added, shaking her head and pulling her hoodie up. Walking away from the pharmacy, a small chuckle is released from the shadows as Abigail disappears from sight. A woman with a monstrous and contorted face walks out of the shadows, a green amulet hanging around her neck with a faint glow. ”Done.” The vengeance demon cackled before disappearing from site. From then on, the town of Story City was forever changed.
The murders were more frequent.
